The rules and grounds of inadmissibility are different for asylum than for other green card applications. Some grounds of inadmissibility, including public charge, affidavit of support, Labor Certification and documentary re- quirements, do not even apply to a refugee or asylee applicant for permanent residence.
Most other grounds of inadmissibility are waivable if the person can show the USCIS that it would be in the public in- terest, humanitarian interests or would assure family unity to grant the waiver. This means that the asylee or refugee applicant does not need to have one of the special qualifying relatives (spouse or parent) to get a green card, assuming that there is a ground of inadmissibility which requires a waiver.
